The Isle of Skye, with its rugged landscapes, enchanting lochs, and charming villages, is a dream destination for many people. Whether you’re planning a relaxing escape or an adventure-filled holiday, finding the right accommodation is crucial.
Since we moved to Skye, I’ve had countless questions about where to find the best accommodation. The thing is, what’s best for one is not for another, so instead of a list of accommodations, I’ve compiled my best tips to keep in mind when you’re searching for where to stay in Skye.
These will help you search and look for the best accommodation in Skye for your trip!
1. Plan and Book Early
The Isle of Skye is a popular destination, especially during the peak summer months. While it’s a large island size-wise, it’s not in population, so accommodation is limited. The size of the island also means if you’re staying off it, it can be a long drive to some of the most popular sites.
People start booking up to a year in advance or as soon as places open their calendars. I would recommend you start planning at least 6-9 months ahead.
That doesn’t mean you can’t find options later, of course!
If you’re looking for accommodation closer to your travel date and not having much luck, then try a few of the accommodation specific Facebook Groups. These include Rooms in Skye, Skye Rooms, and Accommodation On Skye – Owners Advertising. These often have late cancellations, or last minute availability and are direct with the owners.
We do have our Isle of Skye Travel Tips Group, but direct accommodation requests should go to these instead. We’re happy to help with all your other planning!
2. Consider the Location
Skye offers diverse landscapes and attractions spread across the island. As mentioned, Skye is not actually that small, so you will likely find yourself having to drive distances up to an hour or so from where you’re staying. That’s fine if you group together attractions and see lots together in a day rather than going back and forth, but you might want to consider staying closer to some of the areas you want to spend more time in to cut that travelling time down.
Here are a few key areas to consider:
- Portree: The island’s largest town and a central hub. It’s best for those travelling without a vehicle so they can access tours and bus services. There are also restaurants, eateries, and shops within easy walking distance.
- Broadford: Skye’s second largest town. A good base for exploring the southern part of the island, with various accommodation options and beautiful natural surroundings and still within easy distance of many other areas.
There are a few other areas with more amenities, like Dunvegan and Carbost, but many other areas are also more remote and not necessarily within walking distance of amenities.
This isn’t a bad thing! See more on amenities below…
3. Choose the Right Type of Accommodation
Skye offers a range of accommodations to suit different preferences and budgets:
- Hotels and Inns: For those seeking comfort and convenience, with amenities like on-site dining.
- Bed and Breakfasts: Experience Scottish hospitality and enjoy homemade breakfasts, often with a local touch.
- Self-Catering Cottages/houses: These are perfect for families or groups who prefer a home-away-from-home experience and the freedom to cook their meals.
- Hostels: Budget-friendly options for solo travellers or those looking to meet fellow adventurers. Read more about hostels in Skye here.
- Camping and Glamping: These are ideal for nature lovers who want to immerse themselves in the island’s beauty. Options range from basic campsites to pods. Read more about Skye camping spots here.
If you intend to eat out a lot, then you may want to consider a hotel for convenience, or if you want to relax in the evenings in your accommodation, you might choose self-catering with a view.
4. Check Reviews and Ratings
The best place to look for reviews is on bigger websites where lots of different people will have commented their opinions.
Before booking, read reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor, Booking.com, and Airbnb. Look for recent reviews to get the most accurate picture of the accommodation’s current state. Pay attention to comments about cleanliness, hospitality, and the accuracy of the listing’s description.
5. Consider the Amenities
As we mentioned above, location is really important because of the different amenities available. Some people prefer more remote accommodation where they feel like they’re having an escape, and others will want to have certain things within walking distance.
For example, if you want to be walking distance to a pub or places to eat, make sure you check this is available when you’re looking for accommodation.
The best place to check these things is by seeing what is in the listing itself and looking up the accommodation yourself on Google Maps. This way, you can get more of a feel for where it is and check driving and walking distances with the route planner.
In addition to the location amenities, consider what’s important to you about the accommodation itself.
Do you need free Wi-Fi, parking, or pet-friendly accommodation? Are you looking for a place with a stunning view, a cosy fireplace, or a hot tub? Make a list of your must-haves and use filters on booking sites to narrow down your options.
6. Check the Cancellation Policy
It’s always wise to know the accommodation’s cancellation policy, just in case. That doesn’t mean it needs to be 100% flexible, but give yourself the best you can for your own circumstances. This way, you can make changes to your plans without incurring hefty fees.
7. Explore Local Listings
In addition to well-known booking platforms, check local tourism websites and smaller, independent property listings. Sometimes, you can find hidden gems that aren’t listed on the major booking sites.
This is especially true for Skye, where some owners will not advertise on these platforms but purely use local advertising or the Facebook Groups mentioned above under the first tip.
8. Be Aware of Seasonal Variations
Accommodation prices can vary significantly between high and low seasons. The peak season for Skye is generally from around the end of April to the end of September, but can stretch a bit either way.
Some accommodation providers only let out their places during this time, and close for the winter. If you have your heart set on somewhere make sure it’s open, available, and book early!
If you have flexibility in your travel dates, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) for potentially lower rates, along with fewer tourists.
9. Look for Unique Stays
Consider staying in a unique property to give a special touch to your time on the island. There are traditional croft houses, eco-friendly places, and some amazing views you can’t get elsewhere.
10. Contact Hosts Directly
If you have specific questions or special requests, don’t hesitate to contact the property owners or managers directly. They are best placed to provide you with answers about the accommodation and their local area.
Booking accommodation on the Isle of Skye requires a bit of planning, but with these tips, you can find the perfect place to make your stay unforgettable. Whether you’re drawn to the island’s dramatic landscapes, rich history, or vibrant culture, the right accommodation will make it even more enjoyable!

Look forward to your comments . I had a day trip to Portree, but the next time I would like to stay there fir a week. I have stayed at Inverlochy Castle and Kinloch B&B, both very different but very special. Dining on sight. Can you recommend a place in Portree which would be of this caliber?
Hi Frederick! That sounds like a great plan. Unfortunately I’ve never stayed in either myself so I’m not sure how to compare. You could look into the Cuillin Hills Hotel?
I’m planning my second visit to Scotland next year . After Edinburgh ( that I enjoyed very much) , my plan to visit the Highlands and other places of interest ( as the Island of Skye) was not fulfilled due to overcrowded tours and high season. Hope with your help , next time will be different.
I hope so! It takes a bit of planning but you can still visit some of the more popular areas and not be faced with crowds.
