MM Monthly Thoughts: August 2017

Welcome to the monthly update on Migrating Miss! This blog isn’t always in chronological order, or about everywhere I go, so this where you can find extra trip tips and things to do, plus what’s coming up.

Hello, September! It’s my birthday month, which is both exciting and scary at the same time (for reasons I’ll share in a post soon!). But for now, let’s have a look back at August, that month that feels like it should be the middle of the year but is deceptively closer to the end of it… uh oh.

Destinations of the month

Edinburgh – 28 days

Of course, most of this month was spent in Edinburgh! August is the height of the Edinburgh Festivals, with several running throughout the month. It was a little quieter for me this year, unlike last year when I crammed in five festivals over two days! I still went to some events, including the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo for the 3rd time. Because why not?

Edinburgh in August is crazy but a lot of fun. Be sure to read the below posts if you’re thinking of coming in the future, and book accommodation early!

Pollok House, Glasgow – 1 day

Pollok House is a country estate near Glasgow, and one sunny Saturday some friends and I ventured there to try out their ‘Escape the Room’ game. It was definitely a challenge! You can read more about it (and find out if we escaped!) in this post.

Peebles, Scotland – 1 day

I spent another Saturday flying through the trees at Go Ape in Peebles, just south of Edinburgh this time. I’d always wanted to try this high ropes course and it was so much fun!

North Berwick – 1 day

North Berwick is one of my favourite day trips from Edinburgh! EB and I had a great time eating delicious fish and chips at the beach. We decided against walking up North Berwick Law after that…

Highlights of the month

This month I finally started doing something with all the video I’ve taken over the years. And I actually made use of the YouTube Channel I made two years ago! You might have noticed the Video option now on the menu above. You’ll be able to find all my latest videos here! But the best way to see the latest videos is by subscribing to my YouTube Channel!

Here’s one of my videos that went a little insane this month on Facebook…

Lowlights

As an expat, I do live in a permanent location, as much as that’s a bit scary. I strive for the location independent lifestyle rather than being a digital nomad, as I don’t want to be endlessly on the road. Having experienced backpacking and living abroad, I’ve set myself up a number of times in different countries, and now I appreciate being able to travel and then returning home to a bit of normalcy. Having the opportunity to be a part of a more permanent community and spend time on hobbies other than travel is key I think!

However, this month I have been juggling a lot of work and it’s all been pretty overwhelming! Deciding to take on full-time temp work for a month may have been a mistake… three jobs is a bit much!

What’s coming up?

The rest of this year is just going to fly by, I know it! I have a trip planned for every month (and more than one for some) so things are going to be busy around here. Just because summer is over doesn’t mean the travel ends! Be sure to follow me on Facebook for all the latest updates and travel advice.

How was your August?
